Jared Bartman makes us feel that around every corner are equal parts promise and disappointment. For every grove of flowers that’s been unspoiled by insects or the elements and is perky and bright upon inspection, there’s another grove just a few paces further that’s been trampled dead. The almond trees had withered long ago, as he sings here in one spot. Bartman’s arrangements are intricate and stunningly complex, evoking all kinds of sensations that can only come when the air is leaden with sunny shadows.
